Anchor’s mission is to provide easy and powerful podcasting tools for everyone. Because of this, our platform is completely free—no hosting fees, trial periods, or paywalls.

Free means freedom to create. That’s why we want to remove the roadblocks that make it difficult to record, distribute, and monetize your show. Anchor is dedicated to streamlining the logistics and financial obstacles of the podcasting process so that you have more time, energy, and money to put into your episodes. We believe people everywhere—not just the ones who can afford it—should be able to create amazing things with audio and get their voices heard.

Maintaining a free product comes with lots of considerations, so we’re here to answer all the questions you might have about how and why we do it.

Why do other podcasting platforms cost money?

Traditional podcasting platforms charge hosting fees—monthly payments to cover the cost of storing your show online. With modern cloud services and the low cost of file storage today, hosting fees are an outdated and unnecessary burden on podcasters. For almost every single podcast that Anchor hosts online, it costs us less than 10 cents a month. That’s nothing close to the hosting fees required by most other platforms.

The way we see it, it’s pretty simple: you wouldn’t spend money to post a video online, so why should you spend money to upload your podcast?

How can Anchor afford to do this?

Our monetization philosophy is that we should all make money together, rather than profiting off each other’s needs. Anchor includes two monetization features that enable any podcaster to earn revenue from their show: Listener Support and Anchor Sponsorships.

Listener Support enables you to add a ‘Support’ button to your Anchor profile, allowing any listener to pledge a recurring monthly payment to support your podcast.

Anchor Sponsorships (available in the US) pairs podcasters with brands to create custom audio advertisements, allowing you to earn money every time people listen to your show. Anchor Sponsorships is optional and in your control: all ads are read by you, and you get to choose which ones to record and where they play in your episodes.

When listeners pledge money to your show through Listener Support or when Anchor sells an ad placement for you through Anchor Sponsorships, we take a small fee, which is how we keep our tools free for everyone.

**Beginning April 1, 2020, Anchor will be waiving its fee on Listener Support for six months. Creators who use the feature will receive the additional 4.5% in their Anchor wallet through March 31, 2021. We know podcasters are impacted by the world’s current circumstances, and we want to support everyone’s ability to earn money from their podcast.**

Does “free” mean “limited”?

When you sign up for Anchor, you gain access to our complete tools, features, and services. There’s no storage limits, no “premium” version, no long-term contracts, and we won’t ask for your payment info at any time.

Anchor provides tools for every stage of the podcasting process, which you can pick and choose as you see fit. Create your show with Anchor’s episode builder or upload finished episodes that you recorded elsewhere. Monetize your show with Anchor Sponsorships, or seek out advertisers on your own. Anchor is designed with all kinds of podcasters in mind, and how you use it is up to you.

If Anchor is free, does that affect ownership of my podcast?

You own your podcast and all of its associated content. Your audio, your podcast cover art, and your Anchor profile are yours to customize, and you’re free to put your podcast anywhere you choose at any time.

Moreover, you can choose if, where, and how to monetize your podcast, on Anchor or anywhere else.

Anchor is free because we want to make it as easy as possible for anyone to create a great podcast. The world of podcasting improves when it includes more voices and unheard perspectives, and we want to empower everyone to record and share their stories, conversations, and ideas.
